The Schell-Osage Conservation Area, established in 1962 and one of Missouri’s oldest publicly managed wetland habitats, required a sustainable solution to maintain water levels and ecological health. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) enlisted Garney to install a permanent pump station drawing water from the Osage River to address this need. This innovative approach ensures the long-term preservation of this vital natural resource for future generations.

The Schell-Osage Conservation Area attracts migratory birds and is a popular location for waterfowl hunters and outdoor enthusiasts. However, years of makeshift gates and temporary pumps led to fluctuating water levels, complicating fish and wildlife management. To address this, Garney installed a 41×21 intake structure with water control gates on the Osage River, a pump station, a deep excavation for a 48” intake pipe and wet well, and electrical work to support a more reliable water management system.

This project illustrated the value of collaboration between contractors, owners, and engineers in developing innovative solutions for complex environmental challenges. Although pump stations are commonly used for wastewater treatment or flood management, this approach benefits the environment and the local wildlife.

The Schell-Osage Conservation Area’s revitalization showcases how innovative infrastructure can be crucial in preserving natural habitats. The permanent pump station benefits wildlife and improves visitors’ access, setting the area up to flourish for another 50 years.
