This project addressed the growing needs of the Apache Junction Water District (AJWD) and Apache Junction Sewer District (AJSD). With several thousand new homes under construction in Apache Junction, upgrading the existing infrastructure ensured adequate water and wastewater services. This comprehensive upgrade supports new developments while maintaining service quality for existing communities.
The projects introduced several key advancements, including a new regional lift station with a state-of-the-art grinder and submersible pumps. This upgrade improved the efficiency of the sewer pipeline network, which now includes 23,500 linear feet (LF) of force main and a gravity sewer line, ensuring effective wastewater collection and transport.
The new water treatment facility, Water Campus 1, was strategically positioned to optimize distribution and provide necessary fire protection for the City’s new residential developments. This new facility increases capacity with a 3.2 million–gallon (MG) storage tank, a 5 million gallons per day (MGD) booster pump station, and advanced sodium hypochlorite disinfection systems. Garney also expanded the Superstition Area Water Plant to process up to 4 MGD, incorporating new raw water pumps, treatment trains, and chemical feed systems.
The Non-Potable Water (NPW) Reservoir and Booster Pump Station project also involved constructing a 2.0 MG reservoir and a 1 MGD pump station to distribute reclaimed water for irrigation throughout the new residential developments. This system included 9,000 LF of reclaimed water transmission main and a new reclaimed water pump station.
The water and wastewater upgrade projects tackled the complex challenge of quickly upgrading facilities to support the construction of 11,000+ new homes. It required extensive coordination to complete infrastructure improvements while efficiently providing water and wastewater services for ongoing development. The teams effectively managed advanced technology integration and large-scale changes, ensuring the upgrades were executed smoothly alongside residential construction.
